Are Preventative Restorations common or uncommon?

I am unsure about this process. But i had a cavity. And instead of injecting me and filling in the cavity. The doctor grinded at my teeth to remove I guess the decay, and put some resin type filling(it was a blue waxy substance, and looked like he used a UV light or something to seal it) , and covered it up, so it looks like a normal part of my tooth,

Is this uncommon or common? The dentist says, that it is a cheaper alternative way.
I take this treatment well as it has been done for a while. And my dentist has 40+ years of experience. I never brush my teeth, and they are amazing!

its a light cure GIC cement filling which is done for around 2 weeks to see if the tooth heals.

This is a fissure sealing and is very very common on molars as these are first to decay. I feel this should be offered to most teenagers at tje start of possible fillings to prevent later problems however not all dentists agree with this. This is due to the molar tooth having pits and fissures which are ridges and crevices where decay can develop. The glass ionomer material is smoothed over the surfaces and is set with the UV light which you mentioned, this saves deep decay in the future and can last 15-20 years whereas an ordinary silver amalgam filling doesnt and is more expensive and ugly.

You had what is called a sealant placed on your tooth/teeth. It is a perfectly acceptable procedure that is commonly done.
